Herbicides are specifically designed to control unwanted plants, commonly known as weeds. They work by inhibiting the growth of these plants or by killing them outright. The mechanism of action varies among different herbicides; some may target specific biochemical processes unique to plants, while others might disrupt cellular functions essential for plant growth.

In the context of weed management, herbicides can be selective, targeting certain species of plants while leaving desirable plants unharmed, or non-selective, affecting all vegetation they come into contact with. This specificity makes herbicides an essential tool in agriculture, landscaping, and various settings where weed control is necessary.

While insecticides target insect pests, fungicides target fungal diseases, and rodenticides are aimed at controlling rodent populations, none of these categories serve the purpose of controlling weeds, which is why herbicides are the correct answer.
